Winston’s Neighbors
The 1940 United States Federal Census lists fourty of Winston’s neighbors. Every one of these neighbors was born in Mississippi except J.P. and Carrie Castle, who were born in Georgia. There are ten households total (a household meaning a group of neighbors with the same last name), which averages about four members per household. Out of these ten households, eight are African American and two are white. The most educated out of all the neighbors is J.P. Castle, who made it to his 2nd year of high school. Winston’s neighbors included C.D Edmonds, an African American with a 1st grade education living with his grandparents, Geo S. Reese, a white freelance worker in the transportation business with a high school education, and Homer Gandy, an African American farmer with a 4th grade education. Other neighbors were Jessie Outlaw, an African American mother with a 6th grade education, and Rebecca Isaac, an African American widowed farmer Conclusions About Winston’s Environment The neighborhood Winston grew up in was multiracial with a four to one majority of African American families over white families. Based on information on Winston’s neighbors, the standard of education was not much higher than basic grammar school. The town that Winston enlisted in and presumably his hometown is Shelby, Mississippi. Shelby is a small town by any standard. In 1920, Shelby’s population was 1,300 people, and in 1930 it was 1,811 people. |
